Black Hives

In chapter ten, after May's death, August, Zach, and Lily go out and cover all the bee hives with black cloth. It is some kind of ritual for the survivors to remember that life gives way into death. Do you find another significance of covering the hives? Why would the bees leave after a death in the family?
