Flash back friday

Why do you think things became so dysfunctional in the week following May's Death. It seems things were a bit like they used to be when she lived with T-Ray all hectic and violent and then they suddenly went back to normal. Was this a real life flash back? Why did things revert to this way so quickly and then go to normal so suddenly?
