Lily's New Mother?

After reading the first couple chapters of Secret Life of Bees I couldn't help but notice that Lily has a very strong sense of curiousness towards her mother and the unknown of her. Why do you think that she insists on knowing more about Deborah? Also do you think Lily is very close to Rosaleen because she plays a motherly role in Lily's life due to the absents of Deborah? What do you guys think?

  1. I agree with Drew its very evident that she is passionate about finding who and what really happened to her mother. I think its because for your mother to go at such a young age you were old enough to know she was there so you had an attachment to her but not old enough to understand what was happening. thats why she is interested now that she is grown up and able to comprehend the matters. I also think she sees Rosaleen as a mother type figure since thats who she has relied on since a young age. As she is growing up I can see some tension forming in between them where Lily is growing up and wants some responsibility but Rosaleen doesn't know any better and T-Ray wasn't even in that ball park he just punished her.

  2. Drew, Great observation about the relationship of Lily and Rosaleen. It seems as though Lily is trying to fill that void she has because of the loss of her mother. As we continue to read, think about whether Rosaleen is a replacement mother figure for Lily or just a big sister.

  3. Drew, i think the reason why Lilly is curious about her mother's death and what she was like is because her dad's a jerk to her. She doesn't feel like she has a family, the only person she can really talk to is Rosaleen. If her father wasn't mean to her and tell her the truth about her mother's death, Lilly wouldn't go searching for information about her.

    2. I agree with Adam. I think the only reason that Lily went looking for information about her mother was because her father was always lying to her. If T-Ray was always telling Lily the truth, then maybe she would have believed him when he gave her the explanation about Deborah's death. But, knowing that her father is a liar, Lily had no reason to believe her father and a completely agree with her decision to break Rosaleen out of jail and go to Tiburon. She was curious and has every right to be.

  4. Drew, I don't think that Rosaleen is a "mother" like figure for Lily. I think she is more of a best friend or sister. They have gone on this "adventure" together and stolen and lied to get where they are. I just don't think a mother like figure would let this happen. Also, Rosaleen is letting Lily take charge of their situation and she isn't really contributing to any ideas on how they are going to survive. I think that Lily has replaced her mother with Rosaleen, but not as a mother. I think Rosaleen has filled the "emptiness" that Lily feels because of the death of her mom by being a friend, or "sister".

  5. I also agree with Adam but does Lily go searching for information about her mother because she wants an idea of what kind of person her mother was, does Lily want to know if Deborah were going to leave Lily behind, does Lily want to find her Grandparents and live with them so she would have a family, or does Lily just want to start a whole new life with Rosaleen and forget about her real family.

  6. Drew,
I disagree with some of what you are saying. I don't think that anyone can replace someone's mother. That gap in her heart will never be filled. Due to the lack of love from her father, Lily has to learn to grow up without the love from parental figures. I think she uses Rosaleen as a way to fill in that gap, but not as a replacement.

  7. I agree that they like friend more than mother and daughter. People think they like mother and daughter, because Rosaleen is older than Lily. Her age could be her mom and she takes care of Lily in T-Ray's house, but after they run away from the hospital, things turn oppose. Lily takes care of her.
